Vintage Sleigh Bells

12x18"

After years on a horse drawn sleigh, these bells were elevated to become the signal announcing the arrival of Santa's Sleigh. They were shaken on the roof of one family, for many generations.
I was lent these sleigh bells, and with the character acquired over years of loving use, it was a joy to paint them in the realistic trompe l'oeil style. Adding pinned up paper ephem

Baby Red Onions

10x20"

I enjoy boiling garden fresh scallions and slathering  them with butter as a side dish.

So I figured these would be super sweet, being baby red onions. However, I never found out because what I did enjoy was rendering the varied textures - from the shiny white bulbs with rich red-purple striations to the lush greens. Those greens are just squeaky in their plumpness!

painting of a white and green gourds

Ghost Gourds

12x24"

So, not actual ghosts, but gourds in ghostly white-grey-green tones on a rustic barn board. A stunning introduction to autumn.

The soft colors and shadowy, undutlating forms of this subject were a joy to paint.

I'm grateful for the longevity of gourds - life intervenes and this painting took a while to finish. But gourds are wonderfully patient models that endure... and endure!

Crock & Squash

12x10"

Painted during the bleak pandemic months, as we cooked and baked (and drank!). This hubbard squash was not stewed or eaten, because "fresh" still life subjects suffer decline as I paint... slowly. This set up is reminiscent of the dark times we worked to keep at bay with warming soups and stews.

I invite you to celebrate resilience and warmth as you experience this painting.

painting of nautilus shell and hour glass

Time After Time

12x12"

Ocean life was where it all began and this nautilus shell is representative of the that longevity. The hourglass reminds us that time is ever slipping by. Taken together, and courtesy to Cyndi Lauper, this is my, "Time After Time".

First Bell

10x10"

This painting began as an opportunity to examine painting brass, a fairly difficult task. Darkening yellow can become too green or too orange or too muddy, very quickly.

I was reminded of "school bell" so an apple, slate and book completed the story. The red apple also helps tone down greenish shadow side of the brass bell. Painting that slate was such fun. I need to paint it again
