Orange and Opium

When Mandarin oranges are in season, with their glossy leaves attached, they are such an enticing subject for artists!

This one is sitting on a classic carved wooden pedestal in front of a cool battered wooden box... that happens to be an opium box! Or so they tell me. The box was purchased in San Francisco, so maybe it really is a 1920s opium box. Fortunately, I was not stopped by drug sniffing dogs on my flight back to NY!

There are so many interesting textures in this still life - the battered box, dimpled orange skin, corrugated box and pressed linen. It was a challenge and a pleasure throughout the process.
